First-Timer’s Guide to Norwegian Cruise Line’s Great Stirrup Cay
Great Stirrup Cay is Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island escape in the Bahamas. Purchased by Norwegian Cruise Line in 1977, it started as a simple beach landing for cruise guests. Today, it’s a sun-soaked paradise featuring white sand beaches, a wide range of activities, open-air dining, and even a zipline adventure.
I recently visited Great Stirrup Cay for the first time, and despite a stormy forecast, it was a beautiful and relaxing beach day. Whether you’re planning your first visit or are curious about the island’s exciting future upgrades, this guide will walk you through what to expect, what to do, and what’s on the horizon.
Arriving at Norwegian’s Great Stirrup Cay
Currently, guests arrive at Great Stirrup Cay by tender boat. The tendering process may sound intimidating, but it’s efficient if you sign up for early tender tickets as soon as you board the ship. After a short wait, the scenic ride to the island takes about 15 minutes.
Once ashore, my first impressions were all about the soft sand, plentiful seating, and welcoming atmosphere. Umbrella and clamshell rentals are available—clamshells sell out fast and are located at the ends of the main beach. Beach wheelchairs are also available.
Pro Tip: Book a clamshell or an excursion in advance for an earlier tender time.
Coming December 2025: A brand-new pier will allow ships to dock directly, eliminating the need for tenders.
Beaches and Chill Zones at Great Stirrup Cay
The island’s main beach areas offer plenty of lounge chairs, while more secluded cabanas are tucked beyond the busier sections. Even with a full ship, seating is easy to find.
Due to the weather, the water was a bit hazy during my visit, but snorkelers reported that areas near the rocky shoreline had crystal-clear water and an abundance of marine life. Currently, only one ship visits the island at a time, but that may change once the pier is complete and the island expands.
Things to Do on Great Stirrup Cay
There’s something for every type of traveler:
Snorkeling (about $37 rental fee)
Floats for a leisurely day on the water
Wave runners (book early—they sell out quickly)
Ziplining (available for pre-booking or walk-up reservations)
Kayaking for a more active experience
Even if you don’t book an excursion, the beaches alone make for a perfect, laid-back day.
Dining and Drinks on Great Stirrup Cay
All food at Great Stirrup Cay is included in your cruise fare. The island’s BBQ buffet features salads, burgers, hot dogs, ribs, pulled pork, corn on the cob, beans, and pizza. Hot dog carts are also stationed near the beaches for quick bites.
Bars accept your onboard beverage package, but keep in mind:
Bar lines get longer later in the day
There is no beachside drink service—you’ll need to walk to the bar
Picnic tables near the buffet offer shaded seating for mealtime
Shopping on Great Stirrup Cay
Shopping options include:
Flighthouse Gift Shop – beachwear, souvenirs, and essentials
Berried Treasure Bazaar – local merchandise (cash only)
Most island purchases can be charged to your onboard account, except at the Bazaar.
