One of the most delightful surprises on our Adventures by Disney journey through Italy was our stop in the stunning hilltop city of Orvieto. While it was just a short stop on our way from Rome to Tuscany, this charming town quickly became one of my favorite memories from the entire trip.

Traveling from Rome to Orvieto the Disney Way

As with every part of the Adventures by Disney experience, the journey itself was completely seamless. We traveled in a comfortable luxury Mercedes coach equipped with Wi-Fi, and of course, plenty of snacks and bottled water were available throughout the ride.

Our Adventure Guides, Marco and Tina, used the drive to share fascinating history and insights about the region we were traveling through. These moments between destinations were never wasted - they helped bring the landscapes and towns we passed to life.

The rolling countryside gradually gave way to one of the most dramatic views in central Italy: the hilltop city of Orvieto rising high above the surrounding valleys.

The History and Beauty of Orvieto

Perched atop a massive volcanic rock cliff in the region of Umbria, Orvieto is one of Italy’s most striking historic towns. The city dates back thousands of years and was once an important settlement of the Etruscans long before the Roman Empire.

Today, Orvieto is known for its beautifully preserved medieval streets, breathtaking views over the Umbrian countryside, and its incredible cathedral - the Duomo di Orvieto - widely considered one of the most beautiful churches in Italy.

The city is also famous for its artisan traditions, particularly its hand-painted ceramics. Shops throughout the historic center display vibrant dishes, bowls, and decorative pieces painted in traditional Italian designs. Adventures by Disney even arranged special discounts at authentic local shops for anyone interested in bringing home a unique piece of Orvieto craftsmanship.

Standing along the city walls and looking out over the valleys of Tuscany and Umbria is unforgettable. The views alone are worth the visit.

A Family-Run Culinary Experience

One of the highlights of our time in Orvieto was a wonderful food and wine experience arranged at Ristorante Maurizio, a restaurant that has been run by the same family for nearly a century.

The meal was a true celebration of local flavors. We enjoyed a beautiful lunch featuring regional meats, cheeses, and freshly prepared pasta, followed by a delicious dessert that perfectly finished the meal.

What made the experience even more special was learning that many of the ingredients served are produced by the family themselves. Their wines, olive oils, and balsamic vinegars are made locally and have been perfected over generations.

During the tasting, we sampled several of their signature balsamic vinegars - including some that had been aged for up to 25 years. The depth of flavor was incredible.

For guests who wanted to bring a taste of Italy home, special discounts were offered on their wines, balsamic vinegars, and olive oils.

The restaurant also did an excellent job accommodating a wide range of dietary needs, with plenty of options available for children and travelers with allergies.

Time to Explore

After lunch, we had about an hour of free time to wander through Orvieto on our own.

While it wasn’t nearly enough time to fully experience everything this town has to offer, it was more than enough to fall in love with its charm. The narrow cobblestone streets, artisan shops, and sweeping views over the countryside made it easy to imagine spending several days here.

It’s definitely a destination I plan to return to.

Continuing the Journey to Tuscany

After our time in Orvieto, we boarded the coach and continued on toward Tuscany. Along the way, we even made a fun stop at what our guides jokingly called the “Buc-ee’s of Italy” - a large roadside stop perfect for grabbing snacks, coffee, and taking a quick restroom break before the next leg of our journey.

Just like every other part of the trip, the day flowed effortlessly. Transportation, meals, experiences, and timing were all carefully arranged so that we could simply enjoy each moment without worrying about logistics.
